Default Steering Wobble problem

model:
206 2L HDI Quicksilver 03 plate

problem:
Steering related. Intermitant

the full story:
I live 60 miles from work and drive on motorway. Yesterday on way home at approx 12 miles to go my car suddenly started shaking through the steering wheel. It felt a little like what it feels when driving on a cobbled street..only at 70mph. I pulled onto the hard shoulder, had a quick look (it was dark) decided to drive on .. when I restarted engine problem was gone. Drove home, went out in the evening and nothing !

the next day:
Drove to work again, shortly before I arrive at destination it did it again. Drove home later on and nothing.

Any Ideas ?? It makes my a bit nervous. I do approx 600 miles a week to earn a living and really rely on my seemingly super reliable 206 HDI

further info.

Thought it might be the steering fluid. It was low, so topped up. But made no difference. Took my old man out for a spin - He said he thought it was maybe something to do with the wheels / bearings / driveshaft. Basically when the problem kicks in , the steering wheel quickly goes left right left right left right etc in your hands, probably no more than 2 or 3 cm each way.

still puzzled !

Thats a strange one, to drive ok in between all that. I would get under there and check security of all fixings from rollbar clamps to wheelnuts and check all joints, basically a safety check. You dont want some parts of your car going the other way.

Have a look at the power steering pump, is it 100% internally and externally? its nagging at me. Ive had something similar on a different vehicle
Think that was a belt chewing up due to a worn pulley though

Thanks. . Has got tomorrow written all over it. Had to borrow a car for a long journey today and absoutely knackered. However, had all four tyres changed so that can eliminate any tyre problems once I get back in my Pug.

I also noted a kind of Metal rubbing sound when on half lock turning left. The plot thickens.

i asked my dad about this (more experience) said air in the system straight away...he claimed he has had this on a bus before.

in other words you need to do a full bleed on the system

ok - so we seem to barking up the right tree.

the power steering fluid was getting low and air in the system. have filled it right up and done a left / right / left / right jobbie - getting a few bubbles out. it seems to be getting much better and is taking about an hours worth of driving before feeling a slight sensation and very briefly through the steering wheel.

however I still have some odd noises when on mid lock (half way through a turn but most common to go round corners) .

but yes - any forum readers with a similar problem to what I describe. Check your power steering fluid / pump .

This can also be caused if one of your wheel balancing weights has decided to lemming itself off the wheel

Mine goes from 65ish+ but its not consistent, you'd have thought i'd just get a new weight on but alas that seems too much effort for me for some reason!

Not often i motorway it anyway
