Default MOT Failure

Wow ....car just failed its MOT on slightly perished brake hoses and too much play in o/s anti roll bar, didn't like the price they gave me so i did it all myself, wish i'd known how bloody awkward the link pin would be, i might have done the brake hoses and let them do the rest...had to cut it off in the end with an angle grinder. Still done now and ready for them to cast a glance at the work and give me my ticket
richiepearce likes this.

I take alot of cars for MOT, when i lived / worked in Chartlton i had used the same place for over 15 years. After relocating to Kent it was the third MOT center that was was the one which i now always use, they do their own repairs and know i am in the trade, they are thorough but fair.

Part of the problem with the MOT is that alot of the test areas are left to the judgement of the tester i.e brake pipe corrosion, "slightly perished brake hose".
speaks for itself.

My parents have lived in France for the last 25 years and i like the way they do it,they have a tester who wears a white coat like a doctor, they make no repairs themselves and treat everybody totally equally, and its only ever two years instead of one

id say anything with brakes, is a fail

how would you feel if you passed a vehicle for slightly dodgy brakes to find out later that the car was involved in an accident because it couldnt stop in time.

apparently they are looking to do the 2 year thing in this country...but your still going to get the fat useless bar steward who will try to rip you off...

i pay £50 for a guaranteed pass, a bit much you say, but for a definite pass its good enough for me

I would not advocate or agree with testers passing any equipment that is not up to regs, the point i was making is that there are grey areas, i had a rover 75 the owner brought in as it had failed on corrosion of rear brake lines, when i inspected it there was surface rust and road dirt, i cleaned this with a rag and wd40 did not even require the use of wet and dry, the pipe was sound and not pitted. This should not have failed but the tester may not have liked the car the owner or maybe wanted to generate some worl

That's why the judgement of the tester relys on the experiance and honesty of the person in question.

Just to be perfectly clear i do not agree with the turning a blind eye and letting things go type of MOT

I agree with you all, the mot must be done correctly ,but i do object to being ripped off for work that does not need doing,i just feel sorry for the single female out there that knows nothing about this stuff and pays through the nose for work that doesn't need to be done,i'll let you all know tomorrow how the garage likes my repairs and if they charge me for a partial retest.

How's about a thread of MOT places that we all recommend and don't rip you off, I've got one for West Manchester and one for Wirral.
