Question A mind of its own!

Hi everyone

I have a 206SW 2.0 HDI which I have owned for the past 7 years and covered over 100,000 miles, whilst it's not be the best car ever it's never had any serious issues until now.

Recently it has started what can only be described as wandering from side to side. It's like some has a remote control fitted to it and takes over the steering! The main symptoms are moving of as you change up through the gears each time you depress the clutch it the car jerks to the right and has to be corrected, when you accelerate it pulls to the left, even in 5th gear with no change involved. Its other habit is when doing about 60-70 mph it wanders from side to side even though the wheel is being held firmly, let go of the wheel (not a good idea I know) and it continues to do this not prefering either direction.

So far to try and cure this problem the following have been replaced, some of which needed done anyway others to try and solve the problem:

Replaced:
Front wheel bearings
Front tyres
Link rods
Track rod ends
Lower suspension arms
All bushes / mounts have also been checked and replaced if necessary

None of this has improved the problem

All the above has been carried out by a Peugeot trained mechanic and he has asked advice from other mechanics who routinely work on Peugeot / Citroen at the local dealer. All who have driven it are very surprised with how bad it is with no obvious problems but all agree the problem is with the front of the car, it has to be driven to be believed!

The latest suggestion is to replace the steering rack as apprently seals may have failed internally letting fluid pass the wrong way?

There are no clunks, grinding noises or play and the steerring is not heavy or light and works fine lock to lock.

So if you are not bored reading by now any ideas would be very welcome

Yep, been tracked a few times since this problem started. Never been in any accident since I've had it and was a dealer demonstrator before me.
