Fuel Pump problem ??HELP! 2002 206 1.4 HDi

Hi, just looking for an opinion on what could be causing the problem(s) with my 206 2002 1.4 HDi.
Started happening just today and is already pretty severe, bassically I've noticed while driving along all of a sudden there is no response from the accelerator and speed and revs start to drop. I even tried knocking into neutral and to rev the engine but still nothing and the engine stays at idle despite me pushing the peddle. I then dropped it into 2nd and that seemed to make it start to work properly again. Car carried on repeating this and would start to work again on its own. .

Any help would be greatly appreciated
