Default peugeot 106 wont start.....starter motor?? please help

hi,
i bought a peugeot 106 1.6 xs 1997 model last week.
i was running and starting no problem at all, untill yesterday. i was going out to work and the and tried to start the car and just got a click,
tried several times and just got the same thing, just a click and then nothing.
after about 5 mins of trying this it finally started and all seemed well. even started later on after work.
then left over night went to the car this morning and exactly the same thing but this time wont work full stop.
so im not that mechanically minded to bump started the car and took it down to my dads and he took off the starter motor and tested it with a charger and the solarnoid thing and starter seems to work with this on.
the gear part on the solarnoid also shoots out like it should.....

anyway we tested the battery and all connections and cleaned them up and all working and fine. i also tried to clean the starter motor too.

we put the starter motor back on the car and it still doing exactly the same. just a click. he tried all sorts by running new earth wires and live wires and bridging starter somehow too.
he managed to get it going once but that was all. wouldnt start again.
he also tought it maybe a flat spot in the starter so he turned the engine over and still nothing?
after all the messing he still thinks its the starter motor itself but what i dont get is why it would work off the car.

please can somebody help me with this.

thank you very much
sam
